An interesting announcement from Harman Technology today about their Ilford large format and custom film campaign.

I want to give a lot of credit to them. By supporting film photography’s more conventional formats, but particularly for niche uses such as this, they are respecting and alternative road to travel. One that many of us cut our teeth on and learned about the technical and artistic aspects of photography before digital enticed so many. And in my early days of photography college, it was pretty much Ilford film we were using.

Large format photography is certainly not for everyone. You certainly need patience, but alongside, a desire for an alternative to today’s press, the button, menu-driven an instantaneous capture, that understandably ticks the boxes for the majority. The potential downside of that as I see it, is we are loosing the photographer when so much analysis is placed on technology first and foremost and not image creation.

With large format film photography in particular you will learn so much more about the craft, yourself probably and if you can enjoy it, an extremely rewarding way to create your art. Not overlooking the fact that the image qualities can be sublime.

But the large format shooter and those looking for irregular film sizes have been squeezed, probably more the most as we moved from a largely film to digital world of photography.

That is why I think Ilford should be given lots of credit because they are looking after a significant small niche of photographers. But they certainly I think deserve to be called just that…photographers. Using control, thought and patience, similar to the pioneers of the medium back in the 1800’s. So well done Harman Technology.

Here are the major aspects, including those from whom orders might be obtained from in the UK in due course.

Best wishes and good photography,

John. (30/04/24).

2024 ULTRA LARGE FORMAT (ULF) AND CUSTOM FILM CAMPAIGN IS NOW OPEN

It’s that time of year where we once again give any photographers with the many vintage, collectible, and home-made cameras out there the opportunity to order selected custom sizes of ILFORD ultra large format sheet film and other specialist products without the constraints of the usual minimum order quantities.

You have until Saturday 1st June 2024 to place orders with participating resellers.

WHEN WILL I RECEIVE MY ORDER?

We will start to ship orders to our resellers and distributor network during September and end users should check with their local ULF reseller for expected arrival dates. If your usual reseller is not able to take your order, please get in touch and we’ll see if we can redirect you to the nearest one that can.

  • What does ULF stand for?

ULF stands for ULTRA LARGE FORMAT.

  • What is it?

Our annual ULF campaign gives photographers the opportunity to order non-standard sizes of ILFORD sheet film and other specialist products without the constraints of the usual minimum order quantity.

  • Why do we do it?

We know that there are many vintage, collectible, and home-made cameras out there and that it can often be difficult or impossible to get film for these non-standard formats. This program allows us to support these film photographers to allow the continued use of these cameras.

  • Which films are included?

ILFORD FP4 PLUSHP5 PLUS, and DELTA 100 PROFESSIONAL. Not all films are available in all formats. The options available reflect what has been asked for over the past 16 years. We are happy to consider any other size suggestions but do not guarantee to make them available.

  • How does it work?

We let our worldwide distributors know when the order window for these products will be and which items will be included. They in turn, can inform their network of resellers. We also share this information on our social channels and website. Orders are collated by our COM team and manufactured.
