Tamron have announced a new wide angle zoom lens.

It promises ‘pro’ quality optics and I have long been a fan of the idea of short zoom ranges in some focal lengths to maximise this potential.

Here are the official details:

Tamron SP 15-30mm F/2.8 Di VC USD

TAMRON 15-30mm

DSLR users will soon be able to capture the wider picture with Tamron’s new Ultra-wide-angle 15-30mm F2.8 lens for Full Frame sensors, incorporating professional features such as VC (Vibration Compensation) optical image stabilization, a constant f2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range, whisper quiet USD (Ultrasonic silent drive) focussing as well as a water & dirt repellent coating on the front element.

This Ultra Wide-angle 15-30mm zoom lens continues development of lenses for professional photographers and enthusiasts adding an ultra-wide-angle solution to their current line up of pro quality optics for full frame users.

Superb Image quality and performance

The optical construction of 18 elements in 13 groups, including and XGM (eXpanded Glass Moulded Aspherical) element within the front group and several LD (Low Dispersion) glass elements assures that this lens delivers outstanding image quality throughout the entire zoom range and from corner to corner.

VC stabilization Tailored for Ultra Wide and Low light

Recognising the need for an image stabilization solution for fast f2.8 ultra-wideangle lenses, Tamron have tuned their VC*1 (Vibration Compensation) system specifically for the zoom range of this lens to give excellent performance even with low light or for night scenes.

BBAR and eBAND lens Coatings

Tamron have paid particular attention to their BBAR Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) which has been refined further for this Ultra wide lens. Coupled with the eBAND*2 coatings this results in crisper, crystal-clear images with ghosting and flare which are usually associated with ultra-wide-angle lenses being efficiently eliminated.

Water and Dirt repellent coating

The front element has been specially coated to repel water and dirt to keep it as clean as possible and make it easy to clean resulting in clearer sharper images even when in challenging environments.

Smooth background “bokeh”

The 9 blade curved aperture construction gives amazing smooth backgrounds within the out of focus areas of your image when using wider apertures due to its near circular form.

USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) autofocus control

Tack sharp images with fast autofocus response and almost silent operation give great USD*3 autofocus control to the photographer, together with Tamron’s Full Time Manual focussing operation allowing adjustment to focus manually without having to exit the AF mode.

*1 VC (Vibration Compensation) is Tamron’s proprietary image stabilization mechanism.

*2 The eBAND (Extended Bandwidth & Angular-Dependency) Coating is a new nanotechnology-based coating technique developed by Tamron to reduce unwanted reflection.

*3 USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) is Tamron’s proprietary ring-type ultrasonic motor.
