Samyang_135mm_VDSLR

A focal length that many today find less than exciting, is given a modern optical update with two new Samyang lenses.

This and similar focal lengths, may well get a modern treatment from a number of companies, as many other lenses have already been updated in recent years.

A traditionally focal length (full frame) for portraits, sports and press photography, it rapidly fell out of popularity during the last three decades, owing to the ubiquitous 70/80mm – 200/210mm lens, which has improved enormously during the same time frame.

However, I quite liked the fixed focal length, and used two amazing options in the past, in the manual focus 135mm f/2 Nikkor, then the AF 135mm f/2 DC Nikkor, a lens I helped launch in my days as the advisor on photography at Nikon.

Anyway, here we go with the new Samyang lenses. And although manual focus, I think they look an interesting retro/modern take on things.

Global optics brand Samyang Opticshas announced the release of 2 new lenses: Samyang 135mm F2.0 ED UMC telephoto lens and 135mm T2.2 VDSLR ED UMC cine lens.

Samyang’s 135mm F2.0 ED UMC Telephoto Lens (full-frame)

A manual focus telephoto lens for full frame and smaller sensor sizes. It expresses vibrant colour and soft bokeh, making this the ideal lens for shooting portrait, scenery, wildlife and photo-journalism. The fast F2.0 aperture allows versatile control when shooting under tricky lighting conditions. The lens features 11 elements in 7 groups, including extra low dispersion (ED) to offer high resolution across the image. Samyang’s Ultra Multi Coating (UMC) is used to optimise light transmission whilst minimising flare and ghosting. Close focus is 0.8m and the floating element design captures as much light as possible, minimising spherical aberration and distortion. The body is compact and solid, made of high-strength aluminium alloy and the detachable lens hood protects from flare and ghosting.

  • Suggested retail price £419.99 for Nikon AE
  • Suggested retail price £389.99 for Canon, Sony A, Pentax and Sony E fittings
  • Availability: Early February 2015

The fast, decoupled T2.2 aperture allows versatile control when shooting under tricky lighting conditions and Samyang’s standardised gearing is fitted to the aperture and focus rings. The lens features 11 elements in 7 groups, including extra low dispersion (ED) to offer high resolution across the image.
