Some who may be new to photography, certainly since digital really arrived, will find it hard to believe that there was a time – not that long ago – when Metz flash units were king.

Professional’s shooting Canon and Nikon were not seen in vast numbers with their own camera brand of Speedlites and Speedlights respectively.

Many famous models including the CT-45 and CL- 60 hammer heads were often chosen for their sheer power.

But times change. Canon and Nikon designs just got better and better, not overlooking the fact they were also introducing more technology into cameras and flash units that third party manufacturers found it hard to keep up with.

When this press release came to my attention today, a short read later and I have to say the new 64 AF-1 looks an impressive flash. The fact that it can among others, claims to work with wireless off camera products from your camera brand is a real bonus, let alone the power. But on the latter, don’t forget to compare like with like in terms of focal length spread when looking at different flash units.

It is available dedicated to Nikon and Canon now, others to follow.

Anyway, here is the official press release:

More Power, More speed

The new 64 AF-1 flashgun from Metz

With a ground-breaking guide number of 64 (ISO100 @ 200mm) and a 24-200mm zoom head, the new Metz 64 AF-1 delivers more power than any other TTL hot shoe flash. For more creative lighting, the 64 AF-1 offers Master and Slave settings for off camera flash which are fully compatible with the camera manufacturers own systems, as well as a Servo function for a simple approach to creative lighting where a Master controller is not available.

A huge number of other settings are customisable within the TTL, Auto, Manual, & Strobe capabilities and for professional and enthusiast photographers who like different settings for different situations, there are also 4 programmable user pre-sets so that you can easily save and access the ideal set up for your particular location.
