Leica’s S2 camera system seems a high quality (at a price) option for those seeking better than 35mm sensor performance.

While I have not had a chance to use it yet, I have been impressed by the way the company has step by step extended the line up of system accessories.

The latest addition is an adapter to accept the now defunct Contax 645 system lenses. I used those on that camera quite a at various times in the past and liked that system, supported by the quality of Zeiss optics on the front.

When the Contax name disappeared yet again a few years ago it left users with high performance but expensive glass. The new adapter is now entry for those into another optional system.

New LEICA S-Adapter C Enables Use of Contax 645 Lenses

Solms, Germany, 4 June 2013: Leica Camera AG presents a new accessory for the Leica S professional camera system: the Leica S-Adapter C. This adapter allows the portfolio of Contax 645 SLR lenses to be mounted on to Leica S, S2 and S2-P camera bodies. This therefore increases the number of lenses of excellent performance and image quality available for use with the Leica S medium-format system by an additional nine.

Providing a class-leading digital medium-format solution for photographers who work with the discontinued Contax 645 system, the Leica S-Adapter C offers new applications for their existing lenses. When combined with the Leica S, the adapter enables users to fully exploit the potential of Contax 645 lenses, while simultaneously expanding their versatility. Leica S product features, such as the high burst frequency of 1.5 frames per second, fast autofocus and ISO sensitivities from 100 to 1600, provide numerous additional usage options for Contax lenses.

With the exception of the Manual Focus APO-Makro-Planar T*120 mm macro lens, all Contax 645 lenses from 35 to 350 mm feature autofocus. The smart electronics of the adapter enable full integration of the lenses into the Leica S-System and support all lens functions such as autofocus, manual focusing with focus confirmationand automatic aperture control. EXIF lens data and correction profiles for Contax 645 lenses are also enabled for the conversion of RAW image files in Adobe Lightroom or Adobe Photoshop.

With the launch of this adapter, the portfolio for the Leica S medium-format system now includes over 30 professional-quality lenses for use on Leica S, S2 and S2-P bodies. These include a total of eight Leica S-Lenses from 24 to 180 mm (five of which are also available as alternative options with a central shutter) that guarantee uncompromising imaging quality and flexibility for the most demanding levels of professional photography. Also expanding the photographic options offered by the Leica S-System, the previously launched Leica S-Adapter H enables the use of eleven Hasselblad H System lenses with central shutters and focal lengths ranging from 28 to 300 mm.
