The announcement of the Indra 500 from Phottix looks interesting.

It is a 500ws head just like a good studio light, uses a rechargeable battery or mains power.

Then add in high speed sync for Nikon & Canon, and you have unit that could appeal to many. The design looks pleasingly straight forward also.

The questions for me as always as a pro are these:

Just how good will it be, day in day out, with heavy duty use? From what I have seen and been told, Phottix do make some good stuff but this is new ground for them. Only time will tell, no one yet knows.

In reality though the other question relevant to some but not all will be; does it open up access to a good range of high quality lighting accessories such as soft boxes, reflectors, beauty dishes etc?

On that score I am not sure it does at present. Or what plans the company have if many to do all of that.

But if you can get by with umbrella lighting (and on my workshops many are amazed at just how good that can be), you get power, portability with the automation of a Speedlight/Speedlite.

Plus sync potential up to your cameras top speeds and all the creative potential that brings.

May be worth looking into, but I think you will also have to add your own stands. Here we go with the official details:
